Hévíz, the largest biologically active thermal lake in the world

The Lake Hévíz, located in the heart of western Hungary just a few kilometers from the southern shore of Lake Balaton, is a unique geological and natural jewel. Around it rises the renowned spa town of Hévíz. It is the largest biologically active thermal lake in the world, a warm water basin covering about 47,500 square meters that, thanks to its volcanic origin, maintains a surprisingly constant temperature throughout the year. In summer it reaches up to 38°C, while in winter it rarely drops below 24°C, allowing visitors to bathe among steam and water lilies even during the coldest months. Its geological history dates back roughly twenty thousand years, when intense volcanic activity created a dense network of underground springs and a deep karst cavity from which the thermal waters still gush today to feed the lake. The modern fame of Hévíz is owed to the noble Festetics family, who in the 18th century recognized the healing potential of the site and promoted its development as a spa resort, building facilities that would mark the beginning of Hungary’s long-standing wellness tradition.



What makes Lake Hévíz extraordinary is not only its size or its constant temperature, but also the very composition of its waters. Fed by underground springs that combine hot and cold water, the lake completely renews itself every forty-eight hours, maintaining exceptional purity and a concentration of minerals long recognized for their healing properties. The Romans called it Aqua calidae and used it as a resting station along trade routes heading west. Sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate merge in a natural balance that promotes joint health, improves circulation, and soothes the skin. It’s no wonder that doctors, researchers, and therapists across Europe consider it one of the most effective spa destinations on the continent. Immersed among floating water lilies, imported from Japan in 1905 by a Hungarian botanist, and surrounded by rising vapors, one has the sensation that time slows down and the body rediscovers an older, more natural rhythm.
