Huanglong, Thermal Pools Hidden Among the Chinese Mountains

Huanglong is a nature reserve of unparalleled beauty, an extraordinary area formed by waterfalls and beautiful ponds set among the dense forests and snow-capped peaks of the Minshan mountain range. This stunning reserve is found in China, in the renowned historical area of Songpan County, in Sichuan province.

The most evocative scene in the reserve is perhaps the row of terraced tanks, calcite conformations where hot water is collected, extending towards the forest for over 2 miles. This extraordinary spontaneous formation changes color according to the seasons and winds along the whole valley taking the shape of a dragon, hence the name Huanglog, or "Yellow Dragon".

The Huanglong National Park contains one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet. In fact, this area offers the perfect habitat for numerous endangered species which include the Giant Panda and the Sichuan Golden Monkey. In 1992 the site was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and since 2000, thanks to its particular biodiversity, it has been added to the list of Biosphere Reserves.
