Statue of Unity,India
The Statue of Unity, located in Kewadyia in the Indian state of Gujarat, stands at a height of 182 meters and is known as the tallest statue in the world. It was built in honor of Sardar Vallabhbhain Patel, the statesman who succeeded in creating the Indian Union after 1947, bringing independence to over 500 states that were once under the control of the British Empire.
Inaugurated on 31 October 2018 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and designed by the illustrious sculptor Ram V. Sutar, this colossal statue was built in just 33 months, using 24,500 tons of steel, 1700 tons of bronze and 70,000 tons of cement. This mammoth work sparked quite a controversy among citizens due to its exaggerated cost of over 29.8 billion rupees, or more than 400 million dollars.
There is a museum at the base of the Statue of Unity which is dedicated to the life of Patel. Further up at a height of 135 meters, there is a gallery which lets out onto stunning landscapes of the Narmada River. The statue has become known as a symbol of the technical and engineering skills of the country, sending a message to young Indians to remind them that the future of the country is destined to be even greater.
The Statue of Unity, which stands at 182 meters, beats the record of the "Great Buddha of Lushan" in China, which is 128 meters high. It is twice the Statue of Liberty in New York, and is 5 times the height of Christ Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro. However, the statue’s record is destined to last a
short time, as the construction of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial in honor of the famous warrior of the Maratha Empire, has already been announced. This new statue is said to be inaugurated in 2021 in India, on an island not far from Mumbai and it is said to exceed 210 meters in height!
