Colomares Castle, architectural wonder of the Costa del Sol

Colomares Castle, located in the Costa del Sol, near the village of Benalmádena, Spain, is an exceptional structure that merges architectural elements from different epochs and styles. Built between 1987 and 1994 by the physician Dr. Esteban Martín Martín, the castle is dedicated to exploring Spain's history, with a particular focus on the period of Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. Despite being relatively recent compared to other European castles, this bastion has become one of the region's most iconic attractions.

Colomares Castle is renowned for its eclectic architecture, incorporating elements of styles such as neo-Gothic, neo-Romanesque, and neo-Byzantine. The structure comprises a church, a crypt, an observation tower, and various courtyards, each meticulously designed. The towers, belfries, and bastions give the castle a fairy-tale appearance, reminiscent of a medieval fable. Spanning an area of ??1500 square meters, the fortress stands out as the most imposing monument in the world dedicated to Columbus. Inside, one can discover rich symbolism and numerous references to the life and historical events of the famous Genoese navigator. Among these are the three caravels (the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa María), the Chinese pagoda symbolizing Columbus's original aim to reach East Asia, and the flags of the nations involved in the discovery of the New World.

At the foot of the castle sprawls a charming botanical garden. Here, visitors can stroll among a variety of plants and flowers, enjoying a panoramic view of the Mediterranean coast. Its unique architecture and fascinating history make it a must-visit for those exploring the Costa del Sol. Visiting this castle not only provides a visual experience but also a deeper understanding of the crucial role that Spain has played in world history. The structure is located a few miles from the town center of Benalmadena, about 12 miles from Malaga, and is easily accessible by car or bus. For all information regarding opening hours, ticket costs, and reservations, you can find them on the official website: Castello Monumento Colomares.
