Kampung Pelangi, the Rainbow Village in Indonesia

Kampung Pelangi, which until recently was an anonymous Indonesian village, is located in the center of the island of Java, in the southern part of Semarang. It was once a decadent village with decrepit houses and down trodden, sad tones but after a recent and very original restyling it turned into an extraordinary explosion of colors, quickly becoming one of the major tourist attractions in the area.

Kampung Pelangi, which in the local language means "place with the colors of the iris", immediately won the nickname "Rainbow Village". Its 232 homes were transformed into perfect works of art, thanks to the initiative of a high school member of staff, along with residents of the area, who all managed to totally change the face of the village through government $20,000 of government funding. Each house, including the roofs, alleys and bridges, have been colored with bright colors and extraordinary murals that in a short time have brought life back to the country, transforming it into must see hot spot for Instagrammers from all over the world.

A simple but effective project that demonstrates how little it takes to change a neighborhood. The change was so impactful that the model has already been adopted by the towns such as Kampung Kali Code, in Yogyakarta, and Kampung Tridi, in Malang. Citizens of Kampung Pelangi have managed to prove that a touch of color and a pinch of imagination is enough to give new life to a forgotten village, making it cheerful and lively.
