Rubjerg Knude, the lighthouse destined to disappear among the sand dunes

The Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse, located on the peninsula of Jutland in Denmark, stands on a high, crumbling cliff at 60 meters above sea level. Nestled among the sand dunes and struck by the continuous fury of the sea and the wind, its fate seems marked by an imminent end.

The relentless progress of the sea, which annually erodes the lighthouse by about a meter and a half, combined with the sand dune displacement of 30 feet, leads experts to believe that the lighthouse will be completely engulfed by sand and waves by 2025.

The lighthouse was inaugurated in 1900 and ceased working in 1968. It was once more than a quarter of a mile inland and was considered an important point of reference for sailors of the area. The surrounding area of the structure once consisted of a church, a residential structure and gardens which have now been destroyed and submerged by sand.

After 1968, the lighthouse was turned into a museum and then into a café, but the frightening and continuous storms triggered by nature soon forced the structure to completely close down. Today, this fascinating construction which is half-covered by sand, still stands and attracts a multitude of tourists ready to capture the latest images before time erases any trace of it.
