Salto del Agrio, the hidden jewel of Argentine Patagonia

Salto del Agrio is one of the most beautiful and spectacular waterfalls in Argentine Patagonia, a precious jewel located in the province of Neuquén, about 13 miles from the Caviahue ski resort. Generated by the Agrio river, from which it is named, the waterfall is the result of the ancient volcanic activities that occurred in the area over millions of years.

The water from the waterfall is rich with a quantity of minerals such as iron and sulfur. It flows about 40 meters into a basalt canyon, forming a splendid lagoon with dazzling colours. The shades of ochre, red and yellow are enhanced by the sun's rays during particular hours of the day and transform the site into an extraordinary fairy-tale landscape, another feat of Mother Nature.

The Salto del Agrio is accessible from the Copahue Provincial Park. Admission is free and can be visited at any time of day and in all seasons. It can be reached with a pleasant walk along a well-signposted and easy-to-follow path, it can also be reached by bicycle, but it is better to rely on one of the many guided excursions in the area.
