Mitchell Falls, the Sacred Waterfalls of Australia

Mitchell-Falls-AustraliaMitchell Falls are located within the Mitchell River National Park in the Kimberley Region of Australia. This series of waterfalls is one of Australia's most remote and unexplored places with four levels that cascade from a height of 80 meters into a freshwater lake.

Mitchell-Falls-AustraliaConsidered sacred by the local aboriginal community of the Wumambal, the waterfalls are often referred to as the "Punamii-unpuu”. It is said that the Mitchell Falls hold a "sacred" presence, and according to an ancient legend in the lakes formed by the waterfalls, the falls are also home to beings called Wungurr. The pools are forbidden to swim in, as it is said that they are inhabited by snakes with unearthly powers.

Mitchell-Falls-AustraliaMost of the water that forms these waterfalls comes from the rain that accumulates during wet season. The area is revered as a true paradise, as it is a remote and uncontaminated place which is inhabited by numerous animal varieties which include 220 species of birds, 50 species of mammals and 86 species of reptiles.

Mitchell-Falls-AustraliaReaching the Mitchell Falls is not an easy feat. It takes at least two or three hours of hard road through a rough and bumpy path to get there. Tourists curious about these falls usually visit this spectacular place from above, choosing a scenic helicopter tour.
