Gubbio,Italy
The world’s largest Christmas tree is located in Italy! This gigantic tree lies horizontally along the slopes of Monte Ingino, overlooking the splendid medieval town of Gubbio, one of the most beautiful places in Umbria.
This tree is made up of more than 3000 colored lights which are connected to each other by about 5 miles of electrical cables, measuring close to half a mile high with a star all the way on the top made up of 200 lights.
The tree was first decorated in 1981 by a group of volunteers. Its impressive size made it into the Guinness Book of World Records in 1991 as the largest Christmas tree in the world. Every year about 11,500 kWh of energy is used to light the tree with the help of a solar power generator, to maintain respect for the surrounding environment, keeping the project fully sustainable.
The official lighting ceremony takes place on the evening of December 7th and the tree is lit every night at sunset until January 10th.
There is a wonderful initiative called "Adopt a Light" which gives people the opportunity to dedicate a light from the tree to someone near and dear to you, and it will be lit for the entire Christmas season.
