Wave Rock, the Extraordinary Rock Wave in Australia

The Wave Rock is a natural granite formation located a few miles east of the small town of Hyden, in the extreme south-west of Australia. It is known for its incredible shape which has the appearance of a large sea wave, which is immortalized at the exact moment it seems to "break".

This extraordinary stone wave is 15 meters high and 110 meters long and forms the north side of "Hyden Rock". The granite hill lies within the beautiful natural reserve of Hyden Wildlife Park, known as one of the most beautiful and visited parks in Australia with over 450 examples of Aboriginal rock art dating back 200 years.

According geological studies, the formation which was once buried underground dates back to around 2.7 billion years ago. It is the result of wind and water erosion which over the course of sixty million years eroded the base to bring to light this spectacular wave-shaped sculpture.

Every year, more than 140,000 tourists flock to the area to get a glimpse of this spectacular natural wonder, its ever-changing colors created by various minerals throughout the season, and the chromatic effects with suggestive nuances worth admiring especially during sunrise and sunset.
