Picos de Europa National Park, where rock meets the Atlantic

Picos de Europa National Park stretches across northern Spain between Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and León, a short distance from the Cantabrian Sea. It is part of the Cantabrian Mountains and stands out for its sharp configuration: within just a few kilometers, the landscape rises from sea level to peaks exceeding 2,500 meters. The terrain is dominated by limestone massifs, deep gorges, and widespread karst formations, shaping a landscape that is visually powerful yet still clearly legible. It is one of the oldest national parks in the country, originally established in 1918 as the Covadonga Mountain National Park. From an experiential perspective, the park offers well defined routes and access points without losing its wild character. The Cares Gorge is the most representative route: a path carved into the rock that crosses a deep canyon, following a linear development that allows for a continuous reading of the landscape. More accessible is the Covadonga area, with its glacial lakes Lake Enol and Lake Ercina, where scenic value combines with strong historical significance. For a deeper immersion, places such as Bulnes reveal a human adaptation closely aligned with the morphology of the territory, maintaining a rare balance between accessibility and isolation.



Further defining the identity of the park is the relationship between environment and traditional activities. High altitude pastures and the presence of wildlife such as the Iberian wolf and the griffon vulture contribute to a monitored and still intact ecosystem. Within this context, the production of Cabrales cheese also plays a role, aged in natural caves and closely linked to local microclimatic conditions. Visiting Picos de Europa National Park therefore means engaging with a territory that is coherent in all its components: geology, landscape, and culture integrate without friction, offering an experience that is solid, precise, and difficult to replicate elsewhere.
