Civita di Bagnoregio, a dying town

Civita di Bagnoregio is located on the border between Lazio and Umbria in the province of Viterbo. It is a small medieval village that stands on a spur of volcanic tuff in the Calanchi Valley, a region characterized by a unique and evocative landscape, in continuous geological transformation. It is a historical and architectural jewel, nicknamed "the dying town" due to its position on a tufaceous hill which is gradually being eroded by wind and rain. It is a place with an almost fairy-tale appearanc but, unfortunately is destined to disappear forever. This has led to a drastic decrease in the population, which today has only about ten inhabitants.



The foundation of Civita di Bagnoregio dates back to the Etruscan era, but over the centuries it was inhabited by Romans, Goths, Byzantines. The town developed on a spur of volcanic tuff, surrounded by deep gorges which gave it an unparalleled defensive position. During the Middle Ages, Civita prospered thanks to agriculture and trade and became an important religious center. The narrow streets are lined with ancient stone houses, and the city center is home to the stunning Church of San Donato, with its Romanesque bell tower. The hidden corners of Civita, such as the terrace garden or the courtyard of the house of San Bonaventura, offer glimpses of rare beauty.



Despite its vulnerability, Civita di Bagnoregio has been recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. The village boasts local eateries such as trattorias, restaurants and bars for all budgets, as well as the possibility of staying in charming bed & breakfasts. The only way to access it is via a pedestrian bridge approximately 300 meters long, but the managers of the various venues are able to offer transport services for bags and suitcases using bicycles or the classic Apecar three-wheeled vehicles.
