Kiruna Solar Egg,Svezia
The Solar Egg Sauna is a particular and innovative work of art which is located in Kiruna, in the north of Sweden, about 90 miles from the Arctic Circle. The Solar Egg was made by Swedish artists Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström as a sign of the rebirth and relaunch of a territory damaged by mining and extraction.
The suburbs of Kiruna have been subjected to decades of continuous excavation, and the likelihood that the abandoned mine, along with the city, will collapse is high therefore the city was moved miles away. The Solar Egg is a structure symbol of unity, made to represent the sense of belonging of the inhabitants of this town.
The Solar Egg measures 5 meters in height and 4 meters in width, and is covered by 69 mirrored stainless-steel plates and golden titanium whose function is meant to reflect the surrounding landscape. The interior is entirely made of pine wood panels and furnished with semicircle seats made of poplar. There is a hearth stove in the center whose temperature may range from 167°F to 185 °F.
This egg-shaped sauna is a blend of functionality and artistic beauty, a work designed as a tourist attraction made to represent new opportunities by honoring existing surrounding landscapes and not destroying them.
(The Solar Egg will be exhibited at the end of 2017 at the Swedish Institute in Paris for "Swedish Designes Moves")
